This position will be based out of the Bay Center, WA. Taylor Shellfish Co, Inc. facilities.


WILLAPA NUSERY MANAGER POSITION DESCRIPTION 

Taylor Shellfish is a fully integrated company from breeding our own broodstock to harvesting the product off our farms for wholesale and retail sales. The Willapa Nursery Manager is responsible for managing all commercial nursery operations including algae and primary setting needs for our farms, as well as for independent local farmers.     


MAJOR AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Remote setting laboratory.

This position involves the management and operation of a remote larvae setting laboratory to set larvae on cultch and long line bags to be use by our farms. Some of the major responsibilities include:

  • Setting oyster larvae - Coordinate arrival and ordering of larvae, setting, adjust water quality.
  • Loading and unloading of setting tanks - coordinate with farm managers the loading and unloading of setting tanks.
  • Schedule and coordinate husbandry routines - Management of the algae systems, obtaining larvae and coordinating the movement of shell bags and or long lines in and out of the setting tanks, feeding, water exchange, monitoring of spat, monitoring of water quality.
  • Record keeping.
  • Coordinate the building of bags and keep inventory of supplies
  • Responsible for maintaining the Company Safety Program. This includes holding monthly safety meetings, enforcing safety rules, new employee safety orientation, ensuring all employees are current with required certifications  
  • Check off on payroll and provide your employees with a schedule on a bi-weekly basis.
  • Work with directors to balance setting priorities between the different farms production needs.
  • Develop an annual budget and work within its parameters. Review and analyze monthly financials which include making sure all departmental charges are correctly coded.
  • Participate in bi-weekly seed/larvae planning meetings to keep informed as to what the current production goals are.
  • Manage all nursery supply purchases.
  • Attend company and outside meetings as assigned.


BAY CENTER BROODSTOCK MANAGER POSITION DESCRIPTION


The Bay Center broodstock site manager will oversee tracking and care of oyster broodstock for commercial (ready to be used by the hatcheries) and research (Taylor Genetic Improvement Program (TGIP)) purposes. The manager is responsible for providing proper husbandry for the broodstock from seed to adults and then supplying the hatcheries with broodstock for spawning.


This position includes the following responsibilities: (these responsibilities will be much more detailed in our SOPs)


  • Receive and deploy the broodstock seed
  • Provide husbandry for the commercial broodstock - Following appropriate oyster growing techniques to insure optimal growth and survival.
  • Selecting oyster from requested broodstock groups for delivery to hatchery facilities - Oysters will be chosen based on desirable performance traits outlined in SOP’s. Feedback on the quality of the broodstock is important to help aid the hatcheries in their broodstock requests.
  • Provide husbandry for the TGIP research groups - Since these groups are part of a breeding program, the husbandry will follow different protocols that will need to be discussed with the research department.
  • Provide assistance and labor during the major phases of the TGIP program - Bulk seed deployment in June-July, Test experiment replication in Sept-Oct, and Seed performance assessment in August
  • Keep broodstock database up to date - Ideally after each bag handling or new seed deployment on the farm.
  • Communicate regularly with the Quilcene hatchery’s research department.
  • Update the Director of Research and Technology on the overall performance of the different groups of seed.
  • Ensure that the requirements for proper husbandry are met. - This includes ordering supplies and make sure that the appropriate quality and amount of gear is available (seed bags, cages, trays, tables, long lines…)

 

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES 

  • College degree with background in biology or genetics preferred
  • Shellfish experience preferred
  • Ability to work flexible hours to accommodate the tide and logistics schedule
  • Organized with good computer skills including Microsoft office software (Microsoft Excel knowledge required).
  • Excellent communication skills including the ability to speak comfortably about sustainability, aquaculture and marine biology.
  • Demonstrate leadership by displaying your job expertise, flexibility, positive attitude, initiative, organization, communication skills and enthusiasm.
  • Understand principles of husbandry for oysters and integrating knowledge into daily decision making and practices when handling broodstock
  • Ability to identify and act on immediate issues on the farm, general projects, and problem solve creatively and rapidly either independently or through effective communication with colleagues and supervisors
  • Keep detailed notes on activities and inventory control during maintenance and other activities pertaining to broodstock husbandry practices. Ability to record and share data using Microsoft Office software
  • Attend intra-company workshops and training for development of necessary operational skills: IT, data management, safety and heavy equipment training, First Aid, etc.
  • Must be able to drive trucks up to one-ton & qualify to be on company insurance.
  • Be comfortable operating boats and have a WA State boaters card

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS 

  • Ability to sit, stand and/or walk for up to 10 hours per day.
  • The employee is required to be able stoop, bend, kneel, twist and squat.
  • The employee needs to be able to lift up to 50lbs.
  • The vision requirements include: close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Must be able to speak and hear well enough to communicate with co-workers.
  • Must be able to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, pushing, pulling and fine manipulation
  • Must have agility and balance to safely climb on machines, boats, etc.
